How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select packaging by build: foam-filled boxes for lighter electronic registers, sturdy wood crates for heavy cast-metal counters or multi-unit kits.
- Immobilize mechanisms by locking dials and gears, bagging loose fasteners, and using anti-static wrap for boards; plug ports to keep dust out.
- Mark orientation and fragility clearly; use double-wall boxes, corner protection, and palletize with no overhang, then strap and stretch-wrap securely.
- Document the item as a register assembly under NMFC 128260 and choose the proper class (85 or 100) based on whether it’s crated or boxed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Avoid reclasses with a fixed, non-density NMFC and select the packaging that aligns to the correct subclass for accurate billing.
- Cut damage risk on precision counters by crating heavy units, reducing claims and downtime for metering, fueling, or instrumentation operations.
- Faster LTL quotes thanks to a narrow class band (85-100) and non-haz status, improving scheduling for distributors and service contractors.
- Optimize handling costs by consolidating multiple small registers in one crate or master carton to minimize minimum-charge shipments.
