How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bolt the cane mill frame to a solid machinery skid and add hardwood blocking to keep the rollers and gearbox from shifting during LTL handling.
- Protect critical components: wrap rollers and bearings with VCI paper, cap any grease fittings, and add a plywood guard over the feed area to prevent impact damage.
- Drain and clean sticky syrup residues, then shrink-wrap and band the unit to contain any remaining moisture and keep dust and pests off the machine.
- List “Cane Mill, NMFC 128530, Class 77.5” on the BOL and request appropriate equipment (dock or rigging support) to manage the mill’s high center of gravity safely.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 77.5 enables predictable quotes and simpler rate shopping without density calculations.
- Accurate NMFC usage reduces reclass fees, inspections, and invoice disputes common with heavy machinery.
- Skidded or crated packaging cuts handling risk, lowering damage claims and downtime for farm or mill operations.
- Clear labeling and standardized prep speed tendering, helping align shipments with harvest or maintenance windows.
