How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select the correct subclass by noting whether lettering is covered or paint-filled versus unfilled, and match to the item type—data plates, VIN tags, control panels, or machine badges.
- Prevent surface abrasion: interleave each plate with non-scratch paper or foam, add edge/corner protectors, and shrink-wrap stacks to a backer board. Avoid tape on finished faces.
- For small tags, count and polybag sets (e.g., 50–100), place in inner cartons, then a rigid master carton. Mark piece counts on the packing list for faster receiving.
- Large panels (about 24 in or longer) travel best in a slim crate or on a flat, fully decked pallet. Band securely, keep flat, and apply Do Not Bend and Fragile Surface labels.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 70–92.5 bracket streamlines quoting and reduces reclass or inspection fees for thin, finished plates and panels.
- Non-hazardous designation expands carrier choices and removes hazmat accessorials, improving LTL cost control.
- Finish-safe packing practices cut scratch and dent claims, keeping compliance plates legible and minimizing downtime for equipment installs.
- Single NMFC for engraved/etched items simplifies SKU setup, supports FAK discussions, and speeds procurement-to-shipment workflows.
