How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the exact metal and part type—e.g., aluminum housings, brass valves, bronze bushings, or copper bus bars—and note any delicate machined surfaces.
- Match your item to the correct NMFC subitem and class (70 or 92.5) based on condition and packaging; confirm whether it must be crated, bundled, or palletized on the BOL.
- Package to prevent bend and abrasion: use solid skids, edge protection, interleaf paper or VCI for copper/brass, and block heavy bundles to stop load shift.
- Capture precise weight and cube, keep center of gravity low, avoid pallet overhang, and label with alloy and piece count to streamline inspections.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate selection within the 70–92.5 bracket avoids reclass fees and secures competitive LTL rates for dense nonferrous parts.
- Optimized packaging (crated/bundled) can qualify for the lower class, cutting per‑hundredweight costs on copper‑heavy or mixed metal shipments.
- Clear documentation and standardized prep reduce OS&D claims, speeding quotes and keeping auto and machine shop production schedules on track.
- Non‑hazardous status expands carrier options and simplifies routing, minimizing accessorial surprises and improving service reliability.
