How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the correct sub-item under NMFC 128600 for your iron or steel component (e.g., raw casting vs finished fabrication) to determine class 70 or 85.
- Palletize dense parts on sturdy skids with steel banding and edge protectors; crate irregular shapes or protrusions and block/brace to prevent shifting.
- Protect bare metal surfaces from moisture by wrapping with VCI or poly and adding oil-absorbent liners when needed to avoid staining and rust.
- On the BOL, list NMFC 128600, accurate part description (iron/steel), piece count, packaging type (pallet or crate), weights, and the chosen freight class.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate sub-item selection within the 70–85 range prevents reclass fees and keeps LTL rates competitive.
- Durable metal parts packaged correctly are easier for carriers to handle, improving damage outcomes and claim ratios.
- Consistent classification streamlines quoting and tendering, reducing exceptions and speeding dock turn times.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and helps avoid hazmat surcharges and routing constraints.
