How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the commodity as “Glue spreading equipment, steel with rubber covering, crated – NMFC 128660” on the BOL and reference Note item 128662 to confirm the correct sub-item.
- Crate for stability: block roller shafts, support the steel core, and avoid compressing the rubber cover. Wrap with poly and add desiccant to prevent moisture damage.
- Measure the outside crate dimensions and record actual weight for rating. Class is not density-based, but carriers still need size and weight for routing and capacity.
- Label handling clearly: mark lift points, center of gravity, and “Do Not Stack.” Example: a 48×24×24 in, 420 lb crate rated at Class 60–77.5 under NMFC 128660.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower reclass risk: a defined class range (60–77.5) with crating reduces disputes versus generic ‘machinery’ entries.
- Damage mitigation baked in: crating aligns with carrier expectations for rubber-covered steel parts, cutting claims and downtime for wood and composite production lines.
- Speed to quote: no density formula required, enabling faster LTL pricing and smoother approvals across multi-stop projects.
- Potential cost control: correct sub-item selection (per Note 128662) may qualify for the lower class where applicable, improving lane economics without sacrificing protection.
