How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Secure the mill on a steel skid with welded anchor points; block rolls and housings, then band and stretch-wrap for safe LTL handling.
- Shield hydraulics, gearboxes, and control cabinets using rigid crating plus VCI wrap and desiccants to control moisture during long hauls.
- Mark center of gravity and lifting points on the crate; include total weight with skid and guards so riggers and carriers can plan equipment.
- Select class 60 or 65 under NMFC 128680 based on configuration and packaging density; dense, well-crated assemblies typically rate lower.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 60–65 keeps heavy machinery moves cost-effective, reducing LTL spend versus higher-class categories.
- Accurate NMFC alignment minimizes reclass fees and delays, protecting project timelines for mill installations and refurbishments.
- Robust skidding and crating cut damage risk to precision components, preserving uptime and avoiding costly rebuilds.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier selection and documentation, shortening quote cycles and speeding dispatch.
