How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use heavy-duty double- or triple-wall boxes with internal blocking and foam; add VCI bags and desiccants to prevent aluminum oxidation and abrasion.
- Palletize each box when possible for safer LTL handling; add runners for forklift entry, band and stretch-wrap, and mark orientation or Do Not Stack if needed.
- Print the BOL with “NMFC 128700, Class 100, Non-Haz.” Density isn’t required for class, but include accurate weight and dimensions for rating and capacity planning.
- For multi-box machine sections, label 1 of X and secure boxes together as a single handling unit to reduce loss risk and additional accessorials.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 delivers predictable LTL pricing and cuts reclass/fee exposure.
- Boxed aluminum machinery aligns with standard carrier handling, reducing transit damage and claim costs.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines booking and broadens carrier options, improving pickup speed.
- Clear NMFC citation improves audit compliance and strengthens negotiations on contract freight rates.
