How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Describe the pieces as “aluminum blanks,” note if they are finished, unfinished, or patterned, and select packaging as boxes or crates to match the listing.
- Protect surfaces from scuffs: interleave sheets with paper or film, add edge guards, and use VCI or moisture barrier wrap for anodized or brushed finishes.
- For heavier stacks or premium finishes, crate with interior blocking and foam pads; for lighter lots, use double‑wall boxes, band to a pallet, and mark Do Not Stack if needed.
- On the BOL, reference NMFC 128850 at Class 110, list exact box/crate counts, and provide dimensions and weight for rating and handling even though class is fixed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 110 streamlines quoting and helps avoid surprise reclass fees, improving rate predictability for recurring LTL moves.
- Right-sizing packaging (box vs crate) balances damage prevention and weight, reducing claims on high-value patterned blanks while controlling freight spend.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat surcharges and simplifies carrier selection and routing, accelerating transit and tendering.
- Clear labeling and standardized packing cut handling time and loss risk, supporting on-time delivery for automotive, signage, and machine shops.
