How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the BOL as “Sand or Gravel Power Pump Parts, steel – NMFC 129020, Class 70” and name key items (e.g., impellers, cutter heads, liners) to prevent reclass disputes.
- Palletize or crate heavy steel parts with blocking and bracing; bolt impellers to skids, cap or cover suction flanges, and protect machined faces with VCI wrap or corrosion inhibitor.
- Separate small rings and liners in interior cartons with dividers, then secure inside the master crate; label piece counts on the exterior for clear receiving.
- Stabilize the load’s center of gravity and provide 4-way forklift entry; use edge protectors and metal banding for larger pieces to stop shifting in transit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 enables fast, predictable quotes and reduces the chance of costly reclass fees.
- One NMFC for multiple steel pump components streamlines procurement, bundling, and carrier negotiations for LTL moves.
- Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and simplifies pickup scheduling without special approvals.
- Damage-mitigating packaging cuts claims and keeps dredging, mining, and aggregate operations running with fewer downtime interruptions.
