How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Identify what you’re shipping—platforms and frames, load cells, indicator housings, or hardware—and choose packaging accordingly: boxes for electronics, packages/palletized for mixed parts, or loose on a skid for oversized metal pieces.
  2. Protect electronics with foam, ESD bags, and inner cartons; secure heavy cast or plate parts with blocking, banding, and edge protectors, then strap firmly to a pallet to prevent shift.
  3. Apply the correct weight break for NMFC 129100; heavier brackets typically rate lower within Class 60–100. Quote and bill using actual weight and list totals on the BOL.
  4. Mark paperwork with “Scale Parts” and the packaging type (boxes, packages, loose). Add shock/tilt indicators for sensitive assemblies and note non-hazmat status for carrier clarity.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Reduce freight spend by consolidating smaller components to reach better weight brackets, moving toward lower classes within 60–100.
  • Cut damage and claim costs by pairing packaging to part type—ESD and cushioning for electronics, bracing and banding for heavy structures.
  • Speed quoting and limit reclasses since classification is weight-based with no density calculation, streamlining LTL rate shopping.
  • Avoid hazmat surcharges and special handling fees thanks to a non-hazardous designation, keeping costs predictable.
