How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Box beams with double-wall corrugated and end-cap protection; immobilize with wood cleats or foam so the beam cannot pierce the carton.
- For steel beams, wrap with rust inhibitor or VCI and add desiccants; for wood beams, pad edges to prevent scuffing and spline damage.
- Strap the boxed beam to a pallet with no overhang; if the box exceeds 8 ft, mark as long freight and request special handling instructions.
- Write the commodity clearly on the BOL: “Boxes, scale beam, steel or wood — NMFC 129105, Class 100.” Density is not required; include piece count and box size for handling notes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 rating ensures predictable LTL pricing and reduces the risk of costly reclassifications.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier selection and avoids hazmat fees, paperwork, and transit delays.
- Boxed packaging aligns with standard dock processes, improving damage prevention and lowering claim exposure for precision scale components.
- Consistent classification helps manufacturers, calibration labs, and service shops consolidate shipments and negotiate better contract rates.
