How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Unitize frames on heavy-duty pallets or steel skids using blocking and 2-inch banding; add edge protectors to prevent strap bite into painted steel.
- Cap sharp edges and welded stubs, then wrap with VCI or moisture barrier paper to limit surface rust; secure loose hardware in a bolted accessory box.
- Measure the full footprint including baseplates and lifting lugs; note center of gravity and overlength to avoid unexpected accessorials and handling issues.
- Mark lift points and keep fork clearance accessible; for oversized bases, request carriers equipped for long or irregular steel loads and specify no-top-stack.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate Class 60–85 selection reduces reclass fees, improves quote accuracy, and protects margins on industrial projects.
- Non-hazardous steel simplifies carrier onboarding and expands capacity options, shortening lead times for urgent builds.
- Proper bracing and banding lower damage rates on heavy steel, cutting claim costs and downtime in equipment installs.
- Consolidating multiple frames on custom skids optimizes cube and handling, driving down LTL linehaul cost per unit.
