How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm which weight-break applies (two classes: 60 or 85) based on actual shipment weight, then match the correct NMFC sub to your bill of lading.
- Palletize whenever possible: use heavy hardwood skids, steel or poly banding, and corner boards. Keep stands contained to prevent roll or shift in transit.
- If shipping loose, block and brace with dunnage or cribbing on the trailer floor, and request proper load securement handling from the carrier.
- Mark each bundle with total weight and piece count, and place center-of-gravity labels on asymmetrical stands to guide safe forklift or sling lifts.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Leverage weight-based rules to pursue the lower class at higher weights, improving LTL rates without changing product specs.
- Palletized, unitized loads reduce handling time and damage risk, cutting claims and minimizing detention or special handling fees.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and carrier acceptance, speeding tender-to-pickup timelines for maintenance yards and track projects.
- Accurate weights and clear labeling help avoid carrier reweigh or reclass charges, stabilizing quoted freight costs.
