How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List “NMFC 129500 – Scales, NOI” and Class 85 on the BOL so carriers bill correctly; quote with actual weight and exterior dimensions even though class is fixed.
- Choose packaging by form factor: bench and retail scales go in rigid boxes with foam around the load cell and display; heavy floor/platform scales belong in wood crates with blocking and skid runners.
- Isolate accessories. Wrap indicators, cables, and calibration weights separately and band them inside the box or crate so nothing shifts or scuffs the weighing platform.
- Mark orientation and protection needs: “This Side Up,” “Keep Dry,” and forklift entry sides on crates. Add corner guards and shock labels for sensitive electronic models.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: a fixed Class 85 eliminates density disputes and cuts reweigh/reclass fees for mixed shipments of different scale types.
- Lower claim risk: boxed/crated requirement aligns with carrier handling for precision machinery, reducing transit damage to load cells and displays.
- Simplified cataloging: NOI coverage lets distributors ship bench, floor, and digital scales under one code, speeding order fulfillment and labeling.
- Better carrier access: mainstream LTL networks readily accept Class 85 machinery, supporting faster pickups and competitive freight rates across regions.
