How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Declare items as KD and list piece counts on the BOL; box all scale beams and small hardware. Example: 1 pallet frame KD, 1 box scale beam, 1 box hardware.
- For loose long pieces (rails, gates, frameworks), bundle with steel banding and corner protectors, then secure to a pallet to meet LTL handling practices.
- Label paperwork and freight: “NMFC 129440, Class 70, non-hazardous.” Use precise names like “livestock chute frame KD” or “vehicle frame component KD.”
- Stabilize and protect: block moving parts, wrap abrasion points, and mark “Do Not Stack” if the top surface can’t support load to reduce damage risk.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 simplifies rating and minimizes reclass fees, keeping LTL costs predictable.
- KD condition reduces cube versus assembled units, often improving freight rates and trailer utilization.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier selection and scheduling flexibility for rail yards, farms, or shops.
- Boxing small parts and scale beams cuts loss claims and speeds receiving, reducing dock time and chargebacks.
