How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Book under NMFC 129640 as steel side or draw plates, packing strips, or screen supporting frames; Class 65 is fixed, so density won’t change the class.
- Bundle flat pieces with edge protectors and steel or heavy PET strapping, or stage loose pieces on wood dunnage; mark “Do Not Bend” to protect flatness on screen frames.
- Space dunnage for forklift tines (three contact points minimum) and avoid chain-to-steel contact; use plate clamps or a spreader bar to prevent gouges and warped edges.
- On the BOL, list piece counts and bundle IDs, note “steel—loose/bundled,” and include dimensions and weight for terminal handling accuracy even though class is not density-based.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating at Class 65 reduces reclass fees and speeds carrier quoting.
- Loose or bundled options cut packing time and align with common mill/OEM workflows.
- Non-hazardous steel parts avoid hazmat surcharges and extra documentation costs.
- Better edge protection and bracing reduce claims, preserving tolerances for OEM and quarry screening lines.
