How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Apply Class 85 for powered shovels—electric or hydraulic—regardless of pallet or crate, and list NMFC 130100 on the BOL for clean rating.
- Prep equipment: drain fuel, cap lines, secure batteries, and lock moving arms or buckets with pins and straps to prevent motion in transit.
- Package smart: block and brace on a sturdy skid or steel-reinforced crate, mark center of gravity, and provide 4-way forklift access for terminals.
- Document clearly: include model/serial, total weight, and dimensions; note any attached implements (bucket, quick-coupler) so carriers plan handling and lift capacity.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 reduces reclass risk and surprise adjustments, improving quote accuracy and budget control.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and speeds tendering, especially for standard LTL networks.
- Proper crating and bracing cut handling damage and downtime, lowering claims and replacement costs.
- Clear NMFC 130100 usage strengthens claim defensibility and shortens dispute cycles with terminals and auditors.
