How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use this when shipping mixed or unspecified auto/machinery components and mark the BOL as “Parts, NOI” to claim fixed Class 92.5; e.g., a pallet of gears, brackets, and plastic spacers.
- Contain small pieces to prevent loss: bag fasteners, box loose items, then band and stretch-wrap to a pallet with edge protectors for stable, inspector-friendly freight.
- Prep used parts by draining fluids and capping ports; wipe residues so carriers accept the cargo as non-hazardous and avoid cleanup delays.
- Quote and book with Class 92.5 and reference NMFC 130080 on paperwork so pricing and dock teams align on the correct classification.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL costs thanks to a fixed class—no density calculations or surprise reclasses.
- Lower inspection risk and fewer billing disputes, since packaging and weight do not change the class.
- Faster quoting and routing for mixed components, improving response times for maintenance and aftermarket orders.
- Better consolidation options for varied parts on one pallet, reducing handling touches and potential accessorials.
