How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State “slag pot mounted on wheels” and NMFC 130140 on the BOL so carriers rate it at fixed Class 70 without density questions.
- Immobilize the wheels: install robust chocks, block fore/aft travel, and cross-chain to lifting lugs or frame points; use at least four securement points.
- For LTL, build a heavy timber skid under the wheel set, lag-bolt the chocks, band the pot to the skid, and mark center-of-gravity and lifting points.
- Confirm handling method before pickup—crane or high-capacity forklift—and ensure the pot is fully cooled, cleaned of loose scale, and free of residual slag.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 simplifies quoting and forecasting, avoiding density disputes and surprise reclasses.
- Non-hazardous designation eliminates hazmat paperwork and accessorial fees, cutting total landed cost.
- Accurate use of NMFC 130140 reduces audit risk, re-bills, and delays at carrier terminals.
- Wheeled configuration, when properly immobilized, speeds loading/unloading and helps prevent detention and rigging overruns.
