How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Document the empty weight, diameter, and lift points (trunnions or eyes). Provide a rigging plan so carriers can use spreader bars and avoid tipping the pot during lifts.
- Build a rigid cradle or heavy hardwood skid sized to the pot’s radius, then block and chain to prevent rolling. Example: 40,000 lb pot secured with four Grade 70 chains and cross-blocking.
- Choose the right trailer: flatbed or step-deck for standard heights, lowboy for tall pots. Confirm axle weights and check route surveys if the load is over-dimensional.
- Mark the BOL with NMFC 130150 and “slag pots, not mounted—empty, non-hazardous.” Add drawings and photos to speed carrier approval and minimize onsite delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC referencing reduces reclass fees and dispute time, keeping steel mill projects on schedule.
- Proper cradling and tie-down design cuts damage risk and claim exposure, often paying back more than the cradle cost.
- Right-size equipment selection lowers detention and crane standby charges by ensuring a clean, first‑attempt load.
- Non-hazardous status simplifies paperwork and broadens carrier options, improving capacity access and rate leverage.
