How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Prepare the unit: empty residual salt/sand, rinse and dry, cap auger/spinner openings, and remove the control box, wiring harness, and loose hardware; bag and tag to the frame.
- Package for LTL: set the spreader on a stout skid, block the mounting sills, and strap through frame rails—not the hopper lip. Pad poly or stainless surfaces and wrap the spinner and chute.
- Reduce size-related charges: detach the discharge chute and spinner guard and nest them inside the hopper to shorten OAL; provide two-way forklift access and mark the center of gravity.
- Document clearly: show NMFC 130355 and material type (steel/stainless/poly) on the BOL, note “Non-hazardous machinery,” and apply “Do Not Stack” or “Fork Here” arrows as needed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Using the correct NMFC item (130355) lowers reclass risk and unexpected rate adjustments, protecting margins in peak winter season.
- Targeted blocking and padding prevent bent spinners and cracked hoppers, cutting claims, repairs, and downtime for fleets and dealers.
- Smart disassembly that reduces overall length avoids overlength and non-stackable fees and can meaningfully reduce billed weight.
- Non-hazardous status expands carrier options and speeds quoting, helping municipalities and contractors move gear quickly before storms.
