Notes
Note 130396: NOTE-Shipper must certify on shipping orders and bills of lading at time of shipment that density is 50 pounds or greater per cubic foot and that actual value per pound does not exceed $5.50. If the shipper fails to so certify both the density and the actual value per pound, item 133300, naming 'Machinery or Machines, NOI,' will apply.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm density is 50 lb/ft³ or higher before tendering. Example: a 21 lb unit in a 10"×8"×8" box is ~0.37 ft³, yielding ~56 lb/ft³—qualifies for Class 70.
- Keep declared value at or below $5.50 per pound. If higher, use the alternate note item (130396) to avoid reclass and billing disputes.
- Pack in heavy-duty double‑wall corrugated boxes with foam blocking that immobilizes the drive assembly and caps the terminals to prevent punctures.
- Print NMFC 130395, Class 70, and “Boxed Starter Motor” on the BOL. Unitize multiple cartons on a small pallet, then band and wrap to protect during cross‑docks.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- High-density Class 70 rating helps secure competitive LTL rates versus lighter, bulkier auto parts.
- Boxed packaging streamlines handling, reducing accessorials and the risk of damage claims for compact, heavy components.
- Clear value threshold ($5.50/lb) simplifies liability planning and prevents costly carrier reclassification.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and speeds tendering, improving transit reliability for aftermarket or OEM replenishment.
