How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the item is a manual carpet sweeper and pack in a rigid corrugated box; immobilize the brush head and dust bin with foam or kraft blocking.
- Fold or remove the handle, wrap bristles to prevent deformation, and add corner guards; double-wall cartons help for multi-stop LTL moves.
- Use a snug fit: fill voids so the sweeper cannot roll inside the box, and mark This Side Up to protect internal dust trays.
- Photograph the packed unit and note model/qty on the carton; this speeds check-in and supports OS&D claims if a rework is needed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Boxed, non-powered equipment is easy to tender, reducing reclassification risk and helping secure competitive LTL rates.
- Protective packing around brushes and handles cuts damage incidents, lowering claims and total landed cost.
- Clear carton labeling and standardized boxing shorten dock handling time, improving throughput and on-time performance.
- No hazmat handling or special permits required, minimizing accessorials and simplifying multi-location janitorial supply shipments.
