How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 130750 and Class 85 on the BOL, describing the item as a carbon dioxide storage tank/receiver with cooling or freezing apparatus (with or without heaters).
- Block and brace the vessel on steel skids or saddles; cap and label all ports, protect controls and compressors, and secure relief valves and gauges against impact.
- Ship in the manufacturer-approved orientation: upright via lifting lugs or horizontal in cradles; mark center of gravity and forklift points for safe LTL handling.
- Before pickup, drain and purge lines, verify zero working pressure, lock out electrical circuits for the cooling/freezing system, and include handling instructions with the unit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 rating delivers predictable quotes and helps avoid costly reclass or inspection fees.
- Non-hazardous status minimizes paperwork and eliminates hazmat surcharges for empty, prepared units.
- Item-based classification (not density-driven) speeds LTL rate shopping and simplifies routing decisions.
- Proper packaging and clear marking reduce OS&D risk, detention time, and service disruptions during transit.
