How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 130720 and Class 92.5 on the BOL to prevent carrier reclass and speed rating.
- Specify if shipping fully assembled or in SU sections; label each piece (shell, heads, nozzle sections) with weight, dimensions, and center-of-gravity marks.
- Protect iron/steel surfaces: cap open flanges, plug nozzles, add VCI wrap, then shrink-wrap and band to steel or hardwood skids with forklift pockets.
- For heavy lifts, use spreader bars and rated lift points; for LTL sections, keep protrusions within pallet footprint and add blocking to withstand cross-dock handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 92.5 removes density calculations, reducing reclass fees and delays.
- Non-hazardous status lowers compliance overhead and avoids hazmat surcharges.
- Clear NMFC mapping streamlines quoting for OEMs and mill shutdown schedules, improving bid accuracy.
- Option to ship in SU sections can right-size freight (LTL or partial truckload) and curb oversize or special equipment costs.
