How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the correct NMFC subclass for beam vs. spool head construction and assign class 70 or 85 accordingly; list the chosen class on the BOL.
- Package to protect flanges and hubs: block inside boxes, or fully brace in a wood crate. Cap threaded hubs and wrap machined faces to prevent nicks.
- Secure to a pallet with steel or heavy polyester banding and lag screws; mark Do Not Roll and keep the center of gravity low to avoid tip hazards.
- Document clearly: “Beam/Spool Heads, NMFC 131020, Class __, material: steel/aluminum/composite, packaged: box/crate.” Include piece count and total weight to prevent reclass delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL pricing with fixed class range 70–85, not density-based, reducing time spent on cube and density calculations.
- Lower damage risk and fewer claims by protecting edges and faces, which helps maintain production schedules for textile, cable, or winding operations.
- Faster quoting and tendering since carriers recognize this machinery component category; fewer inspection holds when NMFC and packaging are stated.
- Reduced accessorial risk by standardizing into boxes or crates that stack and handle cleanly, improving trailer utilization and controlling freight rates.
