How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the subtype before booking: metallic wire strips or flexible clothing. Select the correct subclass to align with Class 70 or 85 under NMFC 131040.
- Protect the teeth and edges. Use rust-inhibitor wrap, corner/edge guards, and rigid boxes with dense void fill so coils or strips don’t shift or kink in transit.
- Control moisture and pressure. Line boxes with VCI paper or poly, label “Do Not Crush,” and ensure minimum coil diameters so wire memory isn’t damaged.
- Document what matters to mills: width, pitch, tooth count, lot/heat codes, and total linear footage. Add NMFC 131040 on the BOL to prevent reclass.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Pick the correct subclass to access the lower rating when eligible, often reducing LTL charges versus blanket Class 85 billing.
- Damage prevention saves claims: boxed packages with edge protection keep wire teeth straight, lowering scrap and rework costs for textile lines.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier selection and speeds tendering with fewer special handling fees.
- Fixed-class (not density-based) rating simplifies quoting and budgeting, giving predictable costs across carriers and lanes.
