How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm whether your yarn winding cores ship in sealed boxes or secure drums; select the matching subitem to land in Class 70–85.
- Use dense internal bracing (end caps, spacers, or honeycomb) to keep cylindrical cores from shifting in boxes during LTL transit.
- Palletize cartons tightly with no overhang and band twice in each direction; for drums, verify closures and add top/bottom protection.
- Document count and core dimensions on the BOL (e.g., 3" ID paperboard cores for weaving mill), and photograph packaging to prevent reclass or claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable mid-range class (70–85) helps forecast LTL spend and avoid surprise reclass fees.
- Boxed or drum packaging provides better damage control for hollow cylinders, lowering claims and downtime for textile lines.
- Clear NMFC mapping speeds quoting and carrier acceptance, improving lead times for mills and converters.
- Correct subitem selection and packaging reduce accessorials and boost consolidation potential on mixed machinery shipments.
