Note 13121: NOTE-Applies when covers are of same or other materials, and whether in same or separate packages.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density per handling unit per Item 170: weight (lb) ÷ cubic feet. Example: 36×40×30 in crate = 25.0 cu ft; 420 lb ÷ 25.0 = 16.8 pcf.
- Select packaging allowed for this item: boxes, crates, or packages. Use crates for billets/ingots, heavy blocks, or reels; sturdy boxes for bolts, rivets, screws, and cups.
- Protect surfaces and edges on sheet, sign blanks, and lineal shapes with corner guards, interleave, and banding. For wire on reels, block the flanges to prevent rolling.
- Group like items and label clearly (e.g., “extrusions,” “rivets,” “foundry flasks”). Put NMFC 13120 on the BOL to avoid reclass or inspection delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-based rating lets you lower class by packing tighter, reducing LTL costs when cube is minimized.
- One item covers varied aluminum forms, simplifying paperwork for mixed shipments of hardware, shapes, and castings.
- Non-hazardous status means fewer carrier restrictions and fewer accessorial surprises.
- Correct packaging (boxes/crates/packages) curbs damage and reclass fees, improving claim outcomes and transit reliability.
