Notes

Note 13121: NOTE-Applies when covers are of same or other materials, and whether in same or separate packages.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Calculate density per handling unit per Item 170: weight (lb) ÷ cubic feet. Example: 36×40×30 in crate = 25.0 cu ft; 420 lb ÷ 25.0 = 16.8 pcf.
  2. Select packaging allowed for this item: boxes, crates, or packages. Use crates for billets/ingots, heavy blocks, or reels; sturdy boxes for bolts, rivets, screws, and cups.
  3. Protect surfaces and edges on sheet, sign blanks, and lineal shapes with corner guards, interleave, and banding. For wire on reels, block the flanges to prevent rolling.
  4. Group like items and label clearly (e.g., “extrusions,” “rivets,” “foundry flasks”). Put NMFC 13120 on the BOL to avoid reclass or inspection delays.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-based rating lets you lower class by packing tighter, reducing LTL costs when cube is minimized.
  • One item covers varied aluminum forms, simplifying paperwork for mixed shipments of hardware, shapes, and castings.
  • Non-hazardous status means fewer carrier restrictions and fewer accessorial surprises.
  • Correct packaging (boxes/crates/packages) curbs damage and reclass fees, improving claim outcomes and transit reliability.
