How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Bundle beams tightly using steel or poly banding with edge protectors and hardwood dunnage every 6–8 feet to keep a stable, square profile.
  2. Mark length and total weight on two sides; flag any pieces over typical LTL thresholds (e.g., 12–16 ft) so carrier long-freight policies are applied upfront.
  3. Trim and tape banding tails, cap or sleeve sharp ends, and add end blocking to prevent shifting or gouging during cross-dock transfers.
  4. For LTL handling, provide 4-inch dunnage gaps for fork access; add skids when small-diameter beams could roll or when floor loading isn’t allowed.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Class 60 rating delivers competitive LTL pricing for aluminum structural beams versus many higher-class metals.
  • Fixed class with no density breakpoints speeds quoting and reduces reclass risk and billing disputes.
  • Correctly bundled packages cut accessorials like additional handling or rewrap, improving total landed cost.
  • Non-hazardous commodity broadens carrier options and accelerates tendering and dock processing.
