How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 131250 and Class 85 on the BOL, and state the packaging as “boxed” or “crated” (e.g., Loom harness, NMFC 131250, Class 85, boxed).
- Match packaging to the assembly: double‑wall cartons with foam and blocking for small harness sets; wood crates with internal bracing for full‑width frames, then band to a pallet.
- Immobilize delicate heddle wires and eyelets; add edge guards, cap protruding rods, and use VCI bags or wrap to curb corrosion during transit and storage.
- Before pickup, verify no internal movement, record photos, and mark handling cues like “Do Not Stack” and “Fragile—Precision Assembly.” Provide accurate dims/weight even though the class is fixed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 yields predictable LTL quotes and avoids density re-bills or audits.
- Correct NMFC usage reduces reclass and inspection fees, accelerating claims resolution if issues arise.
- Box/crate requirements lower damage risk to precision wires and frames, cutting downtime at weaving operations.
- Non-hazardous status simplifies paperwork and broadens carrier options for mills, OEMs, and rebuilders.
