How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use double-wall cartons with partitions or foam-in-place for molded plastic cams, guides, and housings; add anti-static wrap to limit scuffs.
- Palletize cartons without overhang; label each with NMFC 131490, Class 85, piece count, and gross weight, and place a packing list on the lead carton.
- If drums are used, select tight-head plastic or fiber drums with poly liners and desiccant; band and wrap drums securely to the pallet.
- For fragile geometries, request Do Not Stack or add crush cones; otherwise, build stackable packs (32 ECT+ boxes) and photograph the load for claims defense.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable billing: fixed Class 85 avoids density disputes and costly reclass charges on mixed plastic components.
- Fewer accessorials and faster tendering: non-hazardous parts eliminate hazmat paperwork and surcharges.
- Lower claim risk: compliant boxing and clear NMFC markings cut damage frequency and strengthen claims support.
- Lean handling: kit small plastic parts into master cartons to reduce minimum charges and dock touches.
