How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select packing by count and weight: small runs in sturdy corrugated boxes with dividers; heavier assortments in wood crates with blocking to stop movement.
- Prep the metal: cap threads, protect jaws with guards, and wrap each clamp in VCI paper or a rust inhibitor sleeve to prevent abrasion and corrosion.
- Palletize securely: strap or stretch‑wrap boxed/crated units to a 4‑way pallet, add edge protectors, and keep labels showing NMFC 131510, Class 85 visible.
- Document clearly: list piece counts and clamp types, note “Non‑hazardous, NMFC 131510, Class 85,” and request liftgate or appointment if crate weight warrants.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: fixed Class 85 eliminates density disputes and reduces surprise reclass fees.
- Better damage control: box/crate requirement stabilizes heavy steel clamps, lowering claim frequency and admin time.
- Faster rating and booking: simple NMFC entry speeds quotes and improves carrier acceptance across LTL networks.
- No hazmat overhead: non‑hazardous status avoids extra fees, paperwork, and routing restrictions.
