Notes
Note 131672: NOTE-Applies on these articles when equipped or mounted on pedestals or stands that are a basic essential structural part of the power tool machine, and does not include pedestals or stands that are in the nature of accessorial equipment. Shipments may contain accessorial attachments for the tools named.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match the exact machine type (band saw, lathe, drill press, grinder, planer, jointer, shaper, mortiser) and check NMFC notes for any exceptions before quoting.
- Measure the full footprint and height including tables, fences, guards, and stands; if the pedestal detaches, pack it separately and mark pieces as a set.
- Immobilize moving parts: remove blades/discs, lock spindles, release band-saw blade tension, secure quills and carriages, drain coolant or oil, and cap ports.
- Package for LTL: bolt the base or pedestal to a solid skid, block and brace to prevent tip, crate precision models, and avoid strapping over tables or ways.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC mapping minimizes reclass and rebill risk, protecting margins on heavy shop machinery.
- Proper crating and base-bolting reduce damage claims on cast-iron frames, cutting downtime for production floors and makerspaces.
- Clear dimensions with or without stands improve carrier acceptance and can unlock better LTL rates and fewer handling fees.
- Component separation and protective packing optimize density, reduce liftgate issues, and lower OS&D-related costs.
