How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Use boxes to match NMFC 131600. If shipping in bins, check the note for item 131601 as the classification may differ.
  2. Protect the metal: cap sharp tips, wrap each tine with VCI paper or light oil, and add corrugated dividers so edges don’t punch through the carton.
  3. Distribute weight smartly by alternating nose-to-tail, then place boxed sets on a pallet, band and stretch-wrap, and mark Heavy and Do Not Stack if needed.
  4. On the BOL, list: “Tines, rotary tiller, iron or steel, in boxes — NMFC 131600 — Class 60.” Include piece count and gross weight to avoid inspection delays.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 60 rating delivers predictable LTL quotes and minimizes reclass risk versus density-based items.
  • Boxed packaging lowers damage and claim exposure on sharp, heavy metal parts, reducing OS&D costs.
  • Consistent classification helps ag OEMs and dealers plan seasonal shipments and control freight budgets.
  • Accurate NMFC wording speeds dock processing and cuts detention from carrier inspections.
