How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State on the BOL: “Post Drivers, KD, other than wheeled, iron or steel – NMFC 131706 – Class 77.5” to prevent reclass and speed rating.
- Ship knocked down: remove handles/guards, bag hardware, cap tube ends, and strap components to a 48x40 pallet with edge protectors; add VCI or rust-inhibiting wrap for bare steel.
- Stabilize heavy pieces: place striking heads low, block and brace to stop roll or slide, and avoid overhang to protect forks and prevent puncture claims.
- Label clearly: Heavy, Do Not Roll, and Team Lift where applicable; include piece count and pallet count so carriers can verify at pickup.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing at a fixed Class 77.5—no density calculations or reweigh surprises, improving quote accuracy.
- KD packaging trims cube and reduces damage risk, allowing more units per pallet and better cost per delivered unit.
- Non-hazardous classification broadens carrier options and lowers compliance friction for LTL networks.
- Clear item naming (“other than wheeled”) prevents misrouting with wheeled equipment classes, cutting delays and reclass fees.
