How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Specify NMFC 131760, Class 60 on the BOL; density and dimensions are not required for rating.
  2. Protect splines and flanges with caps or end guards, then band shafts to a skid with chocks or V-blocks to prevent rolling.
  3. Center weight on a 48x40 pallet; use at least two steel or heavy poly straps plus stretch wrap. Crate or use long skids for over-length pieces.
  4. Describe as “tractor axle shafts, steel, non-hazardous,” include piece count and total weight. Reconditioned shafts ship at the same class.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable pricing: fixed Class 60 eliminates density disputes and reclass fees.
  • Lower LTL spend versus many auto parts classes, especially on heavy steel shafts.
  • Faster quoting and booking since carriers don’t need cube data for rating.
  • Fewer damage claims when ends are capped and shafts are chocked, reducing returns for farm dealers and OEM service centers.
