How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Describe the axle precisely on the BOL: drive or steer, bare housing vs full assembly (hubs/brakes), and metal type; note capped ends (e.g., “tractor axle housing, forged steel, capped”).
- Prevent rolling and point-load damage by seating the tube in V-blocks or saddles inside a crate, chocking both sides, and banding tightly to a 48x96 pallet with edge protectors.
- Protect machined surfaces and seals: cap splines and flanges, plug vent ports, add VCI corrosion wrap, and keep total skid height under 48 in to avoid cubic minimum charges.
- For multi-axle shipments, separate layers with 4x4 dunnage and anti-slip mats, stagger hub flanges so forklift tines clear, and label clamp points to prevent tine punctures.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower damage claims by shielding splines, flanges, and seals—fewer reworks and faster dealer or farm turnaround.
- Clear descriptions referencing NMFC 131780 reduce reclass risk and surprise re-rate fees even with Class N/A.
- Optimized, low-profile skids improve trailer utilization and help avoid linear-foot or cubic minimum surcharges.
- Non-hazardous status trims paperwork and avoids hazmat-related accessorials for smoother carrier approvals.
