How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use rugged corrugated cartons with dividers or foam to isolate heavy cast-iron shoes and protect friction linings; bag linings to keep out moisture and grit.
- Bundle matched shoes or pads as sets and label axle/side to prevent mix-ups at ag dealers or fleet shops during receiving.
- Keep individual boxes manageable (ideally under 50–70 lb); mark “Heavy” when needed and add edge protectors and tape/straps to stop carton burst.
- Print NMFC 131820 and Class 70 on the BOL; note “non-hazardous tractor brake parts in packages,” and include piece counts for clean claims handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 rating enables predictable LTL quotes for farm equipment dealers and distributors, reducing reclass surprises.
- Non-hazardous status avoids HazMat surcharges and training burdens, lowering total landed cost.
- Standard packaged format consolidates easily with other auto parts, improving trailer cube and linehaul efficiency.
- Damage- and rust-reducing packing cuts claims and warranty replacements, speeding receiving and getting tractors back in service.
