How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 131970 and Class 60 on the BOL, and describe the freight as steel tractor lugs in packages for clear carrier handling.
- Pack lugs in corrugated cartons with dividers or small wood crates, then band to a 40x48 pallet using edge protectors and stretch wrap to contain sharp edges.
- Balance weight and avoid pallet overhang; cap the pallet so it’s stackable. Example: box sets of lugs by size, four boxes per layer for a compact, stable load.
- Include piece counts and part numbers on labels. Do not ship loose lugs; use dunnage or interleaving to prevent scuffing and reduce abrasion inside the package.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: fixed Class 60 means easier quoting and consistent LTL comparisons without density calculations.
- Lower risk of damage claims when packaged and unitized, reducing rework and warranty costs for farm dealers and implement manufacturers.
- Better dock efficiency: stackable, banded pallets speed cross-dock handling and can limit accessorials like reclassification or repack fees.
- Simplified compliance: non-hazardous steel parts are widely accepted by carriers, accelerating tendering and transit planning.
