How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package chains on sturdy pallets or in crated packages with hardwood blocking, steel banding, and edge protectors; shrink-wrap to prevent link abrasion and loose parts.
- Write the BOL description as: Tractor Tread Chain, crawler type, in packages - NMFC 132090, Class 55. Include piece count and total weight; no density entry required.
- Distribute weight evenly and keep stack height stable; heavy sets (often 1,800–2,600 lb) may require splitting into multiple pallets to meet carrier liftgate or dock limits.
- Protect against corrosion and mess: use VCI paper or liners and wipe excess oil. Apply Heavy and Team Lift labels, and ensure forklift access on all sides.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL pricing with a fixed Class 55 eliminates density disputes and minimizes inspection or reclass fees.
- Lower landed costs for heavy steel undercarriage components compared with higher-class parts, especially for construction and ag dealer replenishments.
- Faster quoting and simpler carrier selection since the item is non-hazardous and does not require density or special documentation.
- Consistent packaged handling reduces damage and claim risk, speeding cross-dock transfers and improving delivery reliability to job sites.
