How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack links as banded bundles or crated sets on 48x40 pallets; add VCI paper or wrap to limit rust and use edge protectors under bands.
- Distribute weight evenly and block the stack so individual links can’t slide; mark heavy pallets and ensure forklift access on at least two sides.
- Print the BOL line as: “Tractor tread links, steel, in packages – NMFC 132100 – Class 55 – Non-hazardous,” and include the package count for each pallet.
- For farm and construction dealers, consolidate rebuild kits by model; keep pins and small hardware in separate inner cartons to prevent protrusions or loss.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 for dense steel parts often unlocks better LTL rates and lowers cost per link when pallets are packed to practical weight limits.
- Simple, non-density classification speeds quoting and reduces reclass disputes, chargebacks, and surprise fees.
- Durable packaged bundles mean fewer touches and less damage risk, cutting warranty claims and reship costs for OEMs and rebuilders.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and lane coverage, helping hit tight lead times during peak planting or construction seasons.
