How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle and protect: nest treads face-to-face, add edge guards, then band tightly (steel or heavy poly). Wrap with corrugated or VCI paper and package on a skid or in a crate.
- Distribute weight: keep the center of mass over pallet stringers, limit stack height, and use 48x40 or 48x48 pallets with dense deck boards for safer forklift handling.
- Document precisely on the BOL: “Tractor treads, metal, in packages – NMFC 132180 – Class 65.” Include piece count and total weight; density details are not required.
- Reduce handling risks: stretch-wrap over banding to contain loose shoes or pins, apply Heavy labels, and ask for non-stackable service if bundles are tall or uneven.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL pricing at Class 65 helps control freight budgets for dealers, rental fleets, and farm operations.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat surcharges and simplifies carrier acceptance and driver handling.
- Packaged unitization and clear labeling lower damage risk and claim rates for heavy metal components.
- Accurate NMFC usage reduces reclass/rebill exposure, speeding quotes, pickups, and dock release times.
