How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print NMFC 132820 and Class 85 on the BOL, describing the item as “Water Columns, steam boiler” to prevent reclass or inspection delays.
- Protect ports and glass: cap all threaded or flanged openings, cushion any sight-glass components, and brace the body. Example: bolt a 24-inch column to a skid with foam blocking and plywood guards inside a crate.
- Choose packaging by build: rugged cast-iron bodies without glass can go in double-wall cartons on a pallet; assemblies with glass or gauges should be fully crated and marked non-stack.
- Apply handling cues: use “This Side Up” and “Fragile Glass” labels, and add tilt/shock indicators for calibrated assemblies to minimize cross-dock mishandling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: a fixed Class 85 rating removes density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing unexpected re-bills.
- Lower risk costs: correct crating and port protection sharply cut damage claims, rework, and field service delays for boiler startups.
- Smoother operations: non-hazardous status moves easily through LTL networks with fewer exceptions and no hazmat fees.
- Procurement leverage: OEMs and service shops can standardize pack methods for repeat lanes, improving rate negotiations and transit reliability.
