How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the unit type (trailer-portable or self-propelled) and note the operational status. Pin the mast, secure outriggers, and disconnect batteries before pickup.
- Strip loose tooling like drill pipe, augers, and bits. Pack these on banded skids and label as separate pieces to avoid damage and miscounts.
- Protect hydraulic systems: cap open ports, coil and tie hoses, and check for leaks. Drain water tanks and reduce residual fluids to prevent carrier refusals.
- Stabilize for LTL: chock wheels, block under frames, and use four corner tie-downs on a heavy machinery skid or pallet. Mark center of gravity and lift points clearly.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 means fast, consistent rating without density math—accelerates quoting and dispatch.
- Non-hazardous designation streamlines paperwork and avoids hazmat surcharges for routine LTL moves.
- Clear category for complete rigs reduces reclass and reweigh disputes, protecting margins and timelines.
- Standardized classification across carriers improves rate benchmarking and supports volume-based discounts.
