How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State on the BOL: “Wheels, balance or fly, iron, ≤20% rubber, NMFC 133090, Class 70” and list accurate total weight since the class is weight-governed.
- Palletize each wheel on edge in a V-block or cradle, block the hub, and secure with two or more steel or heavy poly bands with edge guards; stretch wrap alone is not sufficient.
- Protect faces and ring gear with corrugated pads or plywood to prevent scoring and rust; add oil-resistant paper if parts have preservative oils.
- Mark Heavy and Do Not Stack, keep center of gravity low, and allow four-way forklift access to prevent roll and tip during handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing at Class 70 with no density calculation saves quoting time and reduces reclass disputes.
- Non-hazardous designation avoids hazmat surcharges and extra paperwork, lowering total landed cost.
- Clear NMFC 133090 identification minimizes inspection holds and chargebacks, improving on-time LTL performance.
- Proper crating and banding reduce damage claims on heavy rotating components, preserving margins and warranty budgets.
