NMFC Description Class

Notes

Note 133101: NOTE-Applies on compaction wheels designed for use with backhoes, excavators or skid loaders, but does not apply on arms, booms or hydraulics for attaching the wheel to the machine.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify each wheel weighs 400 lb or more; if not, consult Note item 133101 for the correct NMFC treatment before tendering.
  2. Load on lift truck skids or heavy-duty pallets rated for the combined weight. Block the curvature to prevent rolling and secure with steel banding or chains.
  3. Center hubs over deck stringers for balance and allow forklift entry on at least two sides. Pad sharp lugs and edges to protect adjacent freight.
  4. List on the BOL: “Compaction wheels, iron/steel, NMFC 133100, Class 55, on pallets,” including piece count and per-piece weights; e.g., 2 wheels at 1,050 lb each on one 48x48 skid.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable Class 55 rating on heavy steel wheels helps secure competitive LTL rates and more accurate quotes.
  • Explicit pallet/skid packaging reduces handling risk, minimizing accessorials, delays, and damage claims for OEMs and rental fleets.
  • Non-hazardous classification streamlines carrier selection and paperwork, improving scheduling for project-critical deliveries.
  • Clear NMFC documentation lowers reclass exposure and strengthens claims defensibility, creating repeatable SOPs for contractors and dealers.
