How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the item truly fits NOI: use this when no specific NMFC item exists for your machine or part (e.g., unique assemblies, custom frames), otherwise choose the dedicated listing for pumps, compressors, or engines.
- Crate or skid heavy units with 4‑way forklift access; bolt the base, block moving axes, band to the pallet, and add tilt/shock indicators for precision pieces like gearboxes or CNC subassemblies.
- Drain oils, coolants, and fuel; cap hydraulic and pneumatic ports, disconnect batteries, and protect electronics with anti‑static wrap. Bag loose fasteners and tag them to the serial number.
- Mark center of gravity and lift points clearly; use ‘Do Not Stack’ cones if needed, and include a packing list with dimensions, weight, and photos to streamline carrier inspections.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Avoid reclass fees and inspection delays by applying the NOI only when a dedicated NMFC item does not apply, keeping billing accurate.
- Reduce damage and claim costs through bolted skids, blocking, and port capping tailored to rotating equipment and sensitive components.
- Speed up LTL quotes and carrier acceptance with standardized, non‑hazardous, palletized packaging that moves smoothly through cross‑docks.
- Lower accessorials and improve dock throughput by providing forklift‑friendly footprints, clear handling marks, and concise documentation.
