How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the item as “NMFC 133540, Magnesite, crude” and state the container on the BOL (e.g., boxed or drummed) with Class 50 to prevent reclass.
- Use rugged boxes lined with poly to keep fines contained and moisture out; palletize on 48x40 skids, stretch-wrap, and add two steel or poly straps per direction.
- Provide accurate gross weight and pallet dimensions even though the class is fixed; example: 2,200 lb per pallet, 48x40x30 in, 1 pallet, Class 50.
- Load low and secure: block and brace heavy mineral pallets, avoid over-stacking, label “Keep Dry,” and confirm forklift access on all sides.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: Fixed Class 50 for dense mineral freight helps forecast LTL spend and simplifies contract rate negotiations.
- Lower risk of accessorials: Non-hazardous commodity avoids hazmat fees, and tight boxing reduces spill cleanup or rebagging charges.
- Fewer billing disputes: Clear NMFC match and explicit packaging notes minimize reweigh/reclass events and shorten audit cycles.
- Warehouse-friendly handling: Standard boxed pallets integrate with racking and cross-docks, speeding turns and reducing touch labor.
